Watkins to Hang Up Cleats
Tuesday, August 18th , 2026
"The writing was on the wall," said Steve Watkins, the Lehigh Valley reliever, as he announced his retirement from baseball. The 25-year-old Watkins had been sidelined indefinitely with a torn labrum. From the start, the prognosis was not good. Watkins had a good idea he'd have to call it quits. "As much as I love this sport, I knew I'd have to give it up sooner or later."

To date in the season, Watkins is 3-0 with 15 relief appearances and no saves. He has held opposing batters to a .266 average, pitched 33.2 innings, struck out 23 and walked 14 while recording a 3.21 ERA.
